Week 2

Presentation / Feedback

I did a presentation based on the presentation I made last week. As I had thought, I was not sure about the topic and had no idea how to proceed, but I was able to think about the research topic in detail again through the feedback I received from Andreas and some classmates. After reviewing the feedback, I realized that the purpose of my presentation was more focused on what I wanted to create than the research topic. The research topic and my opinion on it were supported, but my presentation seemed to be more focused on the method and results.

1.Feedbacks

feedback 1 My research topic is not clear

I said that my topic is about symbols in web spaces, I need to clarify my topic and the whole research. - why symbols? - What does symbol have to do with the web environment? - why semiotics in my reading list? As I mentioned earlier, I felt like I had to re-approach everything because the presentation topic was a bit off topic.

feedback 2 Case study / References

Case studies and references that I used seemed irrelevant or needed more 'thorough' investigation. Aside from that, I realized from the feedback and classmates' presentations that more effort and research needs to go into everything. I realized that the process I was researching and analyzing was wrong, so I first planned to narrow it down by looking at the various keywords and references from the feedback.

2. Re-research and organise

After the presentation, I felt like there were too many things to fix and that I would have to start over from scratch, but after looking at the keywords, I thought it would be a good idea to do more research on semiotics and decide on a research topic. To research how semiotics has changed and what its meaning has changed in the process of moving to the web, I read and organized the document 'Semiotics of the web' .

The main content of this book analyzes how the semiotic system in the digital space called the web differs from the semiotic system in the existing physical world and what its characteristics are. Through this analysis, I was able to broaden my insight and it helped me to specify the research topic. Among them, the characteristic of the transition of Semiotics was particularly impressive, and I planned to conduct research on the topic of how the meaning of signs and symbols before the web is reduced on the web and also used a lot in the role of navigation.

Why semiotics?

Because I thought that the symbol system on the web was focused on navigation, and as I said above, I thought that this method was different from the symbols used before the web. Also, I thought that non-linear movement methods such as hypertext and the way symbols interact were behind the existing (before web) method, so I was impressed by the topics such as including meaning in the navigation system or building a semiotic system on the web that includes the existing method.

I was impressed by hypertext, a type of semiotics on the web, and its non-linear structure, I decided to first conduct research on the non-linear topic.
